(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Democrats in Illinois' Congressional delegation said they are ready to “fight until hell freezes over” to protect federal programs that help the neediest Americans.

At a Monday news conference hosted by Citizen Action Illinois, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said the Trump administration wants to cut Medicare, Medicaid, medical research, education funding, and more.

“This is all about tax cuts for the wealthy. Everything we're talking about here in terms of cutbacks and the basic programs for the most deserving people in America, is about generating money for more tax cuts for the wealthy people of America,” Durbin said.

Chicago Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL 5th) gave an example.

“When they cut USAID,, Illinois farmers are hurt. The research institutions that use USAID grants are being hurt right here in Chicago.”

Fellow congressional Democrat and scientist Bill Foster added to the list.

“Firing the workers responsible for cybersecurity at the nuclear weapons labs because some 25-year-old kid does not understand the actual jobs of the people that they were firing,” Foster said.

“This is not what people voted for, and we're here to tell you that we're getting the message out in as many ways as they can.”

Congress members Robin Kelly (D-IL 2nd) and Danny Davis (D-IL 7th) also joined Durbin in saying that they will fight the efforts.

“Well, it's a cold day in Illinois, but I can tell you we will fight until hell freezes over to try and make sure that we retain Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security,” Davis said.

They said they would continue to get the word out.
